I was at work this morning and somehow or another I have found out about your story. I could tell you my story which involves a fall from a corporate office, loss of face amongst my peers and spiraling alcoholism but I am sure it is one that you have heard many times.

Accordingly I will not bore you. I will tell you however that I could not be happier with the results of this fall because it taught me so much about life and myself.

One could say it gave me an insight into life that most ‘wage slaves’ do not get.

What I will do however is say thank you for keeping up the fight that you are fighting.

Nowhere more than in Asia is there a need for an awareness into what the corporate monsters and their managerial henchmen are really about.

I'm a German student from Munster and my name is Robert Kampf. I was just reading an article about your struggle in a German online-newspaper and i'm really moved by what i've read.

Even yesterday i had an argument with a good　friend of mine about Japan. I told him how much i admire the Japanese culture - the movies, the music, the fashion and most of all the fact that our cultures have completely different roots.

He told me about the way Japanese companies are working and how cruel and inhuman they treat their employees.

I must admit that i've always tried to ignore this fact in order to preserve the imagination of a futuristic wonderland named Japan.

I realize that this is quite delusional but I still plan to visit Japan and maybe to stay for a while.

Our countries are more alike than most people are willing to admit, and maybe Japan could have learned more from its history especially from the time around World War II.

I admire your courage to protest in a time and a country where opportunism is rarely seen and socially sanctioned.

You have my voice whenever you need it - so keep singing!!!!

昨日も私は友人と日本について議論しました。私はどんなに日本の文化に共感しているかを彼に語りました。映画、音楽、ファッション。みんな我々の文化とは全く違ったルーツを持っています。

友人は日本の企業が如何にひどく非人道的に労働者を扱っているかを語りました。

私は「未来志向のワンダーランド日本」のイメージを大事にするために、これらの事実をいつも無視しようとして来たことを認めざるを得ません。

これは私の妄想だったと思います。

しかし、私は日本を訪れてしばらく滞在しようと計画しています。

私たちの国は　ほとんどの人達は　日本の人達も歴史の中から（特に第２次世界大戦の時代）もっと学ぶことが出来ると思います。

私は、社会的な制裁と、ご都合主義が見られる時代とその国家の中で闘う貴方の勇気に敬服します。

いつでも貴方が望むときには私は貴方のために発言します。ですから、これからも歌い続けて下さい。

I am impressed by your stamina!

From my own experience I known that shop stewards and labour councils in
the most cases do _not_ support the workers, they are mostly interested in
their own benefit.

be glad to have her supporting you.

I read an article at www.spiegel.de ( a german online newspaper ) about you
and your struggle with the company OKI.

Well, I actually was moved by your motives, especially the fact that you
play guitar and sing in front of the companys gates.

I live in Austria and also work in a quite big company which outsources
their workers to other companys.

For the time being I heard different stories about how people are
treated with no respect and so on.
In fact I experienced this myself.

Normally I don't write such emails but I wanted to tell you that it is the most honorable thing you have done for so many years.

Nowadays people are scared because some ( or many ) companies spread fear among their workers.

Most if not all of these people don't do anything against such disgraceful things.

they even don't complain if they don't get paid their christmas bonus, and if they complain or fight for their rightful earned money, they are considered a problem and therefore are fired.

I hope that such thuggery will not happen in future anymore anywhere.

I know how less a human counts for a big company (employees gets off shored, jobs will be shifted into cheap loan countries) and see the helplessness of the affected.

All the more I marvel at you for your courage and persistence to fight against such a behaviour of companies and help to not forget what happened.

Hi Tanaka san,

I just read an article about you on Z-Net by my friend David McNeill...I must say, I am very impressed by your courageous stand against your former company.

I was a journalist for The Yomiuri Shimbun (Daily Yomiuri) for about eight years.

I now live in New Zealand and am working to build an artist's retreat.

I have a backpackers (www.livinginpeace.com) and a motel business (www.karameamotels.com) here.

When I was at the Daily Yomiuri, I discovered the company was contravening several Japanese Labour Standards laws and decided to start a union to address the issues.

Of course the very idea of a gaijin setting up a union in Japan was incredible and I would certainly have been fired if the company discovered my plans before we could formally launch the union in accordance with Japanese law.

So I covertly se about seeking the support of my colleagues to form the union and to begin negotiations with the company to correct many of their policies and to bring them into line with the Japanese Labour Standards Law.

There were several issues, such as overtime pay rates being lower than standard pay rates and their "trial period" for new employees, which in one case lasted for two years during which the employee received no health insurance, pension contributions, or unemployment contributions.

With the help of many of my colleagues and a great lawyer from the National Union of General Workers (Takasu san), we secretly established a constitution and launched our union, The Daily Yomiuri Workers Union.

Of course the Yomiuri has it's own union, but as foreign employees, we were prohibited from joining, which didn't really matter as the union and the company was the same entity and it was very ineffectual.

Anyway, can you imagine the shock wave that travelled through the Yomiuri Shimbun when we announced the formation of the union and the additional surprise when they discovered that we were well within our rights as company employees to do so, that we couldn't be dismissed and that the company was required to negotiate with us.

So we began negotiations with the nine heads of department from the Yomiuri Shimbun, very, very angry men I can assure you. I was subjected to all sorts of psychological abuse, but knew that we would win because we had the law on our side.

The outcome of the story was that after about six months of negotiation, in which we claimed the company was contravening the law, and they claimed not to be, I eventually called their bluff and suggested we let the Japanese Labour Tribunal decide the case...I proposed taking the company to court...they suddenly crumpled and agreed that we were right and agreed to back pay all employees the correct overtime payment for two years...we received about 40 million yen from the company, they corrected their overtime policy, they also abolished the "trial period" policy and began giving employees the correct amount of annual leave. I am very proud that we were able to correct a wrong against small employees at the hands of a large corporation.

There are now similar unions in every English language paper in Japan and many publishing houses, which I believe has improved the employment situation for many foreign and Japanese workers in Japan. Please keep fighting, I respect you very much and you are most welcome to visit me and stay at the backpackers or the motels anytime should you ever make it to New Zealand.

私は約８年間読売新聞（デイリー読売）の記者でした。

私は今ニュージーランドに住んで芸術家の為の施設を建てるために働いています。私はここでバックパッカー宿泊施設とモテルを経営しています。

私がデイリー読売にいるとき、会社はいくつかの点で労働基準法に違反していましたので、この改善の為、労働組合を立ち上げました。

もちろん日本で「外人」が労働組合を立ち上げようという考えは、とんでも無いことであり、もし、労働法に則って正式に組合を立ち上げる前に計画が会社にばれたら確実に首にされたでしょう。

そこで私は秘密裏に同僚に労働組合結成を働きかけ、会社とも彼らの考えが労働基準法に沿ったものになるよう正すように交渉を始めました。

いくつかの問題がありました。例えば、残業手当が通常賃金より安い、試雇用期間の新入社員に対しては（ある場合は２年間続く）健康保険が無く、年金も雇用保険も無い。

私の同僚達とNational Union of General Workers（全国一般？）の高須弁護士の協力で、我々はデーリー読売労組を立ち上げました。

もちろん読売には労組があります。しかし外国人労働者に対しては加盟が禁止されています。この事実は会社と労組が一体であることを示しており非常に非効率なものです。

ともあれ、我々が労組の結成を告知した時、読売新聞から伝わってきた「衝撃波」と、我々が雇用者としての権利を法的に確率していることを会社が知った時の驚きを想像して頂けるでしょうか。

従って、会社は我々を解雇する事が出来ず、交渉を要求してきました。

そこで我々は交渉を始めました。読売新聞から派遣された９人の管理職は非常に険悪な人達でした。

私はあらゆる種類の心理的な虐待に晒されました。しかし法律は我々の側にあるので、勝つと信じていました。

この話の結論は、６ヶ月の交渉の末、（この交渉で我々は会社が法を犯していると追求し、会社はそれを否定した。）結局会社側の手の内を明かさせ、労働委員会、法廷闘争に持ち込むと警告しました。

すると会社は突然弱腰になり、我々の権利を認め、２年さかのぼって残業代の支払いに同意し、４０００万円を支払いました。

また会社は残業時間に対する考え方を改め、試雇用期間の考え方も改め、正当な年休を与え始めました。

私は我々が大企業の少数労働者に対する不正を正すことが出来たことを非常に誇りに思います。

今では全ての日本の英字新聞社と多くの出版社に同じような労働組合があります。

これらの組合は外国人、日本人労働者の雇用条件を改善していると信じています。

私は貴方を、とても尊敬しています。どうか闘い続けて下さい。

そしてニュージーランドに来ることがあれば、私のバックパッカー宿泊施設かモーテルに泊まって頂ければ大歓迎します。
